Optima: Its Development and History

Hermann Zapf created the humanist sans-serif typeface Optima for the D. Stempel AG foundry in 1952–1955. Linotype thereafter distributed it. Zapf sought to design a sans-serif typeface that preserved the grace and readable nature of serif fonts, drawing inspiration from the capitals of old Rome. Optima blends sans-serif and serif qualities by delicately adding flaring to the ends of strokes.Optima has gone through several incarnations, such as the Optima Nova family, which was created in the early 2000s by Zapf and Akira Kobayashi. This iteration enhanced the character set to meet modern requirements while improving upon the original design.
